Henderson mentioned at the tail end of the article as a leading candidate to replace him:

Henderson to Stanford has been a rumor floating around Tiger nation for quite a while. This firing has been expected.

If a job offer is forthcoming to Mitch, I suspect it would be difficult to turn down.

And if Henderson goes to Palo Alto, I’m concerned as a Cornell guy that Earl will be offered the Princeton job.

Well, following the logic of this thread, I’m sure Cornell will bring Donahue back.

You’re in good hands.

If he goes, do we promote from within or search outside for a long term replacement? In the current climate, do we even try to recruit future Lees and Pierces lest they be bought up if they live up to potential? The genie is out of the bottle. College sports are going pro. Is this really what we want?

It would be hard not to bring Earl home but Brett M will then move on I am sure. If it takes NIL $$ to keep Pierce and Lee in the fold then we hope the wealthy corporate alums step up. Are you hearing this, Ariel Capital?

Feels like we could be at the kind of crossroads we haven’t seen since the late 90s. Back then, everything was going extraordinarily well for Princeton hoops until Chris Young signed with MLB and Carmody bolted for Northwestern. The program hit a bumpy patch and didn’t make it fully back to the kind of prominence it enjoyed in those years until now (although the Tigers made respectable appearances in the tournament in 01, 04, 11 and 17–all of which I was fortunate to see at n person).

I really hope that doesn’t happen. The talent on this team—players and coaches—is extraordinary and I hope it holds for at least the next two years.

If Mitch wants to give it a go in the NIL, transfer portal, conference switching world of bit time hoops, it will be a huge loss. (He would have to enjoy airplanes as the Cardinal are headed to the ACC of all places). That world seems very inconsistent with the core values he’s built into his program and his players here.

I remember vividly the conversation around Sidney when he left (which didn’t seem to work out so well). Are there NIL opportunities for coaches to supplement salary?

With Pierce and Lee only being sophomores, I'd think Mitch would wait another year or two to increase his stock. Whatever he gets this year might go way up with another 2 years of The Dynamic Duo.

By contrast, I think this might be the best time for Brian to take an outside offer. Cornell had a great season (and possibly a great postseason) but will likely take a small step back next year. He's proven his ability to maximize talent and turnaround a struggling program.

I really think Earl would be a great pick for the Stanford job.

Well, that would stabilize our situation, and be a boon for Earl, who would I agree be a great choice (and was my choice back when Mitch was hired),

-but-

I don't think Earl has the national profile that Mitch has.

I don't think Bezos has given as much to Princeton as his wealth would justify, but being more on the impecunious side, who am I to judge?

Can anyone shed any light on the official position of the Princeton administration regarding NIL?

Earl would be a great candidate for Stanford, but would the upward trend the past few seasons be enough to overcome a career losing record for him to be considered?

Yeah, I imagine Stanford would want a bigger name. But I doubt it's an attractive destination right now. Their move to the ACC may help - better exposure for the players but also a much tougher conference.

Stanford and Cal will likely be 0-2 win punching bags for the first few years. Not sure a higher profile coach would want that job. Earl probably would. Maybe Langel at Colgate too.

Howard out at Michigan and Stackhouse out at Vandy.

So two more schools with excellent academics in conferences where they are currently failing (or will fail in the future) pretty miserably in basketball.

Although Michigan has the most upside of any of them to improve on this issue in the near term.

While we know Earl is a tremendous coach, I doubt he has the cache yet to keep the Stanford base happy.

I've seen the same names (Kyle Smith, Langel, Henderson) floated for the Vandy job.

Smith has a great thing going at Washington State. I can't see him taking on a hopeless job at Vandy. Michigan might be attractive to him.

As for Mitch, I don't see him leaving unless he gets a quality situation at a high major. He could have left after last year's Sweet 16 run, but he chose to stay with a team that was supposed to take a step back. And boy, was that a smart move.

For that reason, I think he'll see where Pierce and Lee take him in 2025 and 2026. At that point, it'll be time for the powers that be to pay up big time or let MH go somewhere else.

If Mitch goes to Stanford, can he take Pierce and Lee with him?

We thought the same thing about Courtney Banghart thinking she'd stick around until Bella Alarie and Carly Littlefield left.
