We need to improve. We got trapped at the end with no one coming to Kenny's help, and then Avery committed at flagrant foul with under a minute to play that gave LIU two FTs and the ball, but we pulled it out.

Engles continues to give the first years playing time: three of them got minutes with Arop getting his first PT (although Ritter is a first year, he is part of the regular rotation, so I'm not counting him for these purposes).

Good teams win even when they are not at their best. We are a good team.

6-0 start for the first time since 1969!

And the women win too, 84-50; Weiss led with 20.

Too much heartburn at the end.

Engels seems to have trouble deciding who the primary backup guard is. The answer was eventually nobody, just play the starting 3 down the stretch.

He did show a preference to Bedri and then Tavroff at center in a close game. I think center is still fluid.

I didn't have Arop Arop on my bingo card.

As I said earlier, we did not look good and were lucky to hang on at the end.

It has been a running theme in the games I've seen.

Shooting and rebounding have been generally very good, but ball handling has been sloppy at times and defense needs to be tighter. I'm coming to the conclusion that the team is what it is and I'm not convinced Engels can coach up the weaknesses.

I'd feel a lot better if there was someone to turn to when Brown or Noland start coughing up the ball too much but I don't think there is.

I still think there's a very good shot at Ivy Madness.

DLR needs to take over in crunch time.

The primary backup guard was senior Jaden Cooper. He is away for personal reasons but expected back.

We were 23 of 25 from the free throw line; take away DLR’s final 3 pointer as the clock expired and this becomes a 5 point win which we could easily have lost. And if our free throw percentage were not so incredible we would have lost, and to a pretty mediocre team. So I regard last night as a warning sign—we need to improve in controlling the ball, moving more crisply on offense, and stop experimenting with first year guys unless we have a 20 point lead. I think Ritter can be an asset but saw nothing from the other first years that led me to believe that they are even close to being ready for prime time.

Yes, for a much-touted first year group, I have been surprised at how underwhelming they seem to be. Ritter is the one player who appears destined to live up to expectations. But Gianni Cobb has looked a bit lost every time he's been out on the floor, and no one else among the first years has yet done anything to justify the acclaim with which their recruitment was first greeted.

But you are finally seeing what a group that has played for a while together can do in our league. I would be shocked if CU is not a playoff team this year.

Oh, we will be. The question, as you have said, is whether we can take that last, difficult step.

DLR is going to have to be even more assertive than he has been up to this point. He is a potential POY candidate if he wants it badly enough.
