Indiana goes on a 7-0 run to end the half with a 27-24 lead. Outstanding game as usual from Kitty. The Hoosier bigs giving the Lions trouble in the paint, but both teams looking good on the defensive end.

Indiana extended their lead to 11 (43-32), but Columbia closed the 3rd Qtr on a 13-5 run… Hoosiers lead 48-45 entering the 4th.

Columbia took a 59-58 lead, but the Lions had no answer for the Hoosier bigs (Meister & Garzon) in the paint who combined for 38 pts… 72-62 Indiana. Collins and Weiss led the scoring for the Lions with 17 apiece. Kitty with 13 pts, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. The Lions were cold from deep… they finished 4/24 from beyond the arc.
Columbia plays Southern Miss tomorrow.

Southern Miss jumped out to a 26-16 lead, Columbia went on 16-0 run in the 2nd Qtr and take a 37-34 lead into halftime.
Riley Weiss has the hot hand, going 5/9 from deep and has 17 pts.
USM has been hot from deep (6/9) and that’s keeping them in the game.

Weiss with a not very efficient 22; three others in double figures; we run away with it at the end, 85-66.

Riley Weiss kept us in the game with three consecutive threes in the second quarter. She is an outstanding basketball player who can score from anywhere on the court. Weiss, Kitty Henderson, Collins and Page are the standout players on this year's Columbia women's basketball team. Susie Rafu is not quite there yet, but making tremendous strides. Because she is our only big, her continued improvement is vital to Columbia's success. Harvard and Princeton both have much more height than Columbia and will be challenging Rafu in every respect when the teams meet. At this time, there are some missing puzzle pieces. Missing Person #1 is obviously Fliss Henderson, a very talented player with huge potential. Missing Person #2 is the freshman big, Marta Jaama. Missing Person #3 is Mia Broom, the very athletic player from the State of Washington. Does anyone know their status. All of he four newcomers who have already seen action so far have sparkled at times, but it is too early to assess their performance. We do know that Simmons is a terrific athlete and defender and Arrebola is an excellent shooter, but that is about it.

I would not expect much, if any, contribution from Jaama and Broom this year unless they improve greatly as the season progresses. Tor and Montes are the only two who received garbage minutes last night.
I like what I see from Arrebola and Simmons, but both look like a fish out of water at times… I expect both to improve over the next 6 weeks with lots of playing time. The other newcomer (Avlijas, the transfer from Ole Miss) looks like she’ll play a significant role this year. She tends to dribble too much, but I expect her to improve too as the season develops and she gets more in sync with Kitty and Collins.
Fliss is a big wild card now… when she returns, hopefully soon, she will provide a boost to the team on both ends of the floor, especially the interior defense, which seems to be the team’s Achilles heel right now.
They play Ball St in about an hour. This would be a real nice win if we can get it. Ball St beat Texas A&M rather easily last night and played UNC (a Top 20 team) pretty tough a couple nights ago.

Yes, the line is Ball State -2.
I would love to be wrong, but I would be surprised if we win.

31-25 Ball St at the half. They’re double teaming Collins when she receives the ball near the free throw line and it’s giving the Lions a lot of trouble.
Coming into this week, Ball St was ranked #1 and Columbia was #5 in the Women’s Mid-Major poll.

With about 4 mins left in the 2nd Qtr after a basket by Ball St, Kitty had no one to inbound the ball to. I never saw Griffith so angry… Weiss was on the receiving end of that tongue lashing.

No idea about Fliss… but doesn’t appear to be a leg injury. She seems to be moving around just fine.
Achilles heel #2… free throw shooting… 13 for their last 27.

The Lions end the 3rd Qtr on a 10-0 run and lead 50-45 entering the 4th. Collins and Kitty are doing it all.

Agreed… arguably Kitty’s best game. I have always admired her ability to drive/dish/finish, but her defense is incredible too. She’s super quick and anticipates very well.

Yes, Pete, I agree that Kitty was outstanding tonight in Columbia's exciting.come from behind victory in the Consolation Final of the Bahamas tournament. She was just brilliant in every aspect of the game. and, as you noted, Columbia defeated a very good Ball State team that is ranked #1 in the Mid-Majors.

The new Mid Major poll is due out in a few hours… will be interesting to see where Columbia, Harvard, and Princeton end up. Harvard was ranked #17 last week, but aside from one hiccup at Quinnipiac, they’ve been impressive and deserve Top 10 consideration.
I imagine more than half of the 31 voting coaches know little about Kitty and Harmoni, but am curious to see which teams start getting more attention.
