So much easier to root for a Columbia than it is for a P, Y or H. This 8-0 start is very impressive. Now they may have played the single softest schedule in the nation, and few of those games they only squeaked by, but they've also dominated a few of the teams they're supposed to and of course the Nova win on the road, even in a down year for Nova, was fantastic. If they can pull off a road win tonight at Albany they're looking at a 12-0 start. And De La Rosa's performance thus far notwithstanding, they do it as a team with lots of contributions up and down. I'm a fan.

Columbia Women just defeated San Francisco 71-69 at home at Levien Gymnasium. Riley Weiss and Mia Broom had solid games for the Lions.

Stats generally in favor of Columbia, but 11-21 on FT's almost cost them the game.
Quick look suggests that is their achilles heel: 58.1% on the season.
If you exclude Weiss (85%) and Collins (70%), the remainder of the squad shoots 38.8%. Is that an anomoly, or a potential problem?

Unfortunately, it looks like an actual rather than a potential problem. As you noted, this year the team is shooting at 574%. Last year they shot at 713%. Hsu shot at 752% and took more FTs than anyone else, so that helped our average. Last year Collins shot at 861%, Page at 756% and Weiss at 733%, but Kitty was at 596% and Rafue also at 596%.

And we're down by 17 at the half against Albany, 55-38, so without a pretty extraordinary second half, any chance of a 12-0 start will now evaporate.

Rubio DLR having a very, very rough go of it--Great Danes are all over him, giving him zero room to operate.

Well, he's deciding to take it to the hoop so far this half, and so far it's working.

With a little over 2 minutes to go, Albany has 6 guys who have hit at least two 3 pointers. Been bombs away tonight although in truth Columbia has been outplayed in pretty much every facet of the game.

We said that the glory of a 8-0 start, even if you faced poor teams, was that usually one of them might beat us. Well, we have apparently run out the string as far as it could go--we faced a good team tonight that hit endless 3s, and the result was a mini-disaster.

We are going to see this type of defense in the IL. DLR is going to be mugged, and Engles will have to figure out how to deal with it.

Yes.
I picked the right game to miss. But this has me concerned.
Problem #1 - the scheduling of too many cupcakes is not preparing the team for IL play. Other than Nova and Albany, the schedule has been too light (though the Lehigh win has aged better than expected). The next 3 games against 2 D-IIIs and a down Fairfield aren't going to tell us much.
Problem #2 - 19 turnovers? You can't win with that many. Sloppy ballhandling won't cut it in league play.
Problem #3 - Albany shot 15-33 from 3. Not good.

A "cupcake schedule" is not intended to prepare an ivy League Basketball Team for Ivy League play. That is not the intention. A "cupcake schedule" allows the stronger IL teams to play their subs. Another intent might be to improve a team's record, but no one will ever admit to that.

Looks like Engles went deep into the bench—had to miss the game; would appreciate any insights on the younger guys.

Proof the cupcake games aren't needed to play subs, plus they should be getting plenty of run-out over the next two games.
At this point I'm more concerned that the team isn't getting enough of a taste of what league play is going to look like - it's going to be different than playing Mercyhurst and Stony Brook, much less Merchant Marine and Sarah Lawrence.
Anyone know why Robledo didn't play?
