Yale takes a long trip to sunny El Paso for two games. The first is against John Groce's Akron Zips, featuring old friend Isaiah Gray. Akron seems to be pretty poor on defense, but plays quickly and has a sharpshooting, high-powered offense. Winner gets the winner of UTEP/Jackson State, loser gets the loser.

i watched most of the 2h...tos too high and somewhat flippant again.

akron looked like a high school squad on the glass but credit to our bully ball.

our shooting while limited from outside was timely. the d is encouraging. samson simmons and townsend played v tough.
i like the combo.

its like not playing pouli was deceptive. that was an old good yale team not the recent vintage. will need more shooting against utep.
hopefully pouli will play and blend

it is incredible that yale is playing w/o poulakidas and beating even this years akron and vermont given how yo/yo this team had been with him.

basically lost 2 starters from this year +wolf and are in ken pom top 100

thats the bull case.

more particularly watching simmons emerge while a catalyst i mentioned it could be...has been surprising in its short term magnitude even to me.

the bear case is we desperately need john back and need to find some floor spreading and shooting from elsewhere.
you hope to see a nice blend with john and some more dog in the supporting cast which is why a short term injury to your star can be fortuitous.

i certainly hope he's back like now and its seamless bc i am v impressed w brown etc

simmons is an elite athlete obv and that always translated on d.

but if he can score the ball in more than one way in addition to his defensive prowess...this changes the ceiling for this team.
2 data points dont make a trend as of yet.

but some of his plays in 2h were jawdropping.

he ripped a board w his head at rim level. he has go go gadget arms.
here's to hoping the light has firmly turned on for him.

so much is made of recruiting stars and the like. but there is no question he had the most rated potential in hs by the "experts" of any yale player since this was done.

and his raw athletic gifts and length are the why.

incredibly gutsy effort.

disapointing to mess up the inbounds with a chance to win it.

the freshmen all contributed to the comeback. now get healthy simmons and poulakidas somehow and someway.

Having a shot to win a game on the road down two starters is nothing to sneeze at. Unfortunately, only one Ivy League team could get extremely favorable officiating today, because Yale definitely did not get any favors from the refs.

Huge game from Riley Fox today, and Devon Arlington had some quality minutes too. Glad that some of the young guys are getting a chance to prove themselves and build confidence.

If Casey is out for any length, though, things could get dicey.

yes.

simmons was absolutely balling which just sucks for him and the team.

bez was bad. a mediocre game from him and we steal that one. or hit a ft. or get a call.

but jones was 3/3 in the high school portal. they are flat out good.

simmons' perimeter d wouldve really helped in this one forgetting his burgeoning offensive and rebounding game

but given the homer refs and even imagining a yale team being competive without their 2 best players for this whole game is encouraging assuming they get healthy very soon.

I wondered about this at the time, but I wasn't sure: looks like the clock started too early on the final BLOB. If the clock starts when it should, Trevor Mullin has a one-and-one to tie and possibly win. Frustrating.

that is amazing and obvious upon review.

i am more worried about the injuries though.
i have serious ptsd when thinking about ankles.
they always lingered for me.

rewatched the part i missed this am.

fox is athletic even assuming his shot doesnt fall like that. celiscar is so intriguing. brathwaite didnt have his shot but has moxie and is smooth.
arlington who has never played is capable. mullen is v twitchy thi small.

the bad news is the IL is good enough this year such that you dont want to have to rely on these young/bench pieces too much like you had to in this game to get to the top 4 so thats concerning

but on an encouraging note this is as talented a group of young guys adding in aletan as any era for yale imo.
its intriguing to observe regardless of how it turns out
