The article in today's CU Spectator about H and PU having an advantage in recruiting athletes due to their aid policies (and endowments) is interesting and something that's been under the radar for a while.
A couple of months ago I did a little research on this subject and found that the total, theoretical, contribution of undergraduate tuition at Harvard is about $175M/year (that's if every undergrad paid full tuition) and that Harvard offers in excess of $100M in aid to undergrads. I never found out what % was grants and what was loans...but, the really interesting numbers are H's total operating budget ($2.4B) and their endowment (over $22B). Given the continuing growth of the endowment and average returns the net contribution that undergrad tuition provides to the overall budget can only be described as 'Peanuts'!! Its not too much of a stretch to imagine that in the future H may provide grant aid to such a degree that undergrads coming from families with under $100K in income will actually be asked to shell out little or nothing for tuition and board. The implications of that on recruiting are stupendous...particularly in terms of enlarging the potential pool of recruits.
