It's a win if our position players don't have to pitch.

Kentucky loses at home today to UNC-Wilmington, and is now off until next Saturday, so Cal will have their attention for a whole week preparing for us.

Kind of annoying that we’re being distracted from this exclusive Tyrese Maxey interview by the game they’re ignoring,

UK up 39-29 at the half. Good job by the Quakers late to stay in contact after Kentucky went up 39-23. We hit a couple of 3s early but ended the half only 2-12 — UK worked very hard to deny the threes with their length and aggressive close outs.
Slajchert with another outstanding half, 6-8 from the floor, notably all 2s because of that Kentucky perimeter D.
Kentucky getting their 7-footer Bradshaw back for only his second game has been a big difference for them on both ends.

We cut the lead down to one early in the second half, but couldn't sustain the run.
The team has fought back repeatedly, but haven't gotten much offense from the bench. Kentucky has a 35-5 advantage there.
A 15 point loss hurts, but it could have been far worse. We competed from start to finish.

UK 81 Penn 66 FINAL
A flurry of 3s powered an early second half run which cut the lead to 1, but Penn had a turnover and a 3-point miss on consecutive possessions and ever got that close again, although they hung around far longer than was comfortable for the Wildcats. A stretch of sloppy play which included multiple live ball turnovers by the Quakers allowed UK to push the lead back to double digits and they never looked back.

Calipari was no dummy. As soon as they went up double digits late, he had his guys slow things down and crank up the D, clogging all the passing lanes. Turnovers ensued.
I hope all the Spinoso noise subsides, he was really good today (ok, may be not at the line.) All 3 guards were solid offensively, Smith did his thing and Holland got minutes too.
In the end, depth and athleticism were the difference. Personally, I thought it was a good showing.
PS: Announcers noted Penn had 4 lefties starting. Spinoso, Slajchert, Smith, Perkins? I had never noticed that before.

Spinoso noise? This performance should fuel the talk. Why doesn't he play consistently well??? Spinoso was mostly good but he makes some really bad plays and his defense is atrocious. When our guards get beat off the dribble he NEVER steps up and challenges, giving up layups regularly.
He also had a stretch with a live ball turnover and then ran down in time to foul the shooter for an and 1.
He is maddening in that he is good enough to make plays against Kentucky and at other times seems like he shouldn't be on the floor.

Interestingly, attendance was 9,007. Could it have been played at the Palestra?
Thought Penn hung in as long as they could. I was pleased that they came from 16 down to 1 down with two chances to go ahead before they ran out of gas.

You saw the defensive lapses and I saw the beautiful dimes and the spectacular athletic blocks at the other end. Yes, he can be frustrating, but I still saw this as one of his better games against power 5 competition no less. I think it would be a lock for him to get power 5 offers if he were to hit the transfer portal (heaven forbid.)

Basketball is not a zero sum game. You don't get to make 2 great plays and 2 stupid plays. At power 5 schools those players don't play.

I might be one of the noisy ones, but it isn't a personal attack on Spinoso. He is definitely one of our best players and our only productive big man. I make noise about what it will take for him to be sure-fire all-ivy, and most likely first-team. He has already reached a far greater level than I expected when he was recruited. I get frustrated because I see how close he is to getting there - he needs to finish bunnies (albeit defended).

He is what he is. A Fran Dougherty who doesn't rebound or shoot FTs as well. He has some nice moves around the basket but make inexplicable turnovers and cannot shoot from the line, which is killing us.

Spinoso, Slajchert, and Perkins all had subpar ORat game scores in the KenPom box score, the first two because of the their turnovers, the latter because of his poor shooting #s.
And PF10 is right, far too many of those TOs from the two most experienced players were live ball.
